Title: GWAS IN CHINESE POPULATION: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
|
GWAS has been widely employed to dissect the genetic basis of common diseases, leading to the identification of an unprecedented number of common disease risk alleles. However, there is a tremendous disparity in term of the representation of different ethnic populations in GWAS efforts, with most of GWA studies performed in Caucasians. Through collaboration with several clinical groups in China, we have carried out a series of GWA studies in the Chinese population and identified a number of novel disease susceptibility genes for psoriasis (Zhang et al. 2009 Nature Genetics), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (Han et al. 2009 Nature Genetics), leprosy (Zhang et al. 2009 NEJM) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) (Bei et al. 2010 Nature Genetics)These efforts have provided much needed GWAS data of Chinese population, and more importantly, offered opportunities for the direct comparison of GWAS findings between Chinese and Caucasian populations. In this presentation, the opportunities and challenges for working in Chinese population will be discussed. |
