Biosketch:
Professor Ingrid Winshipappointed as the Inaugural Chair of Adult Clinical Genetics at the University of Melbourne, and Executive Director Research for Melbourne Health in November 2006.

She graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1981 then completed postgraduate training in genetics and dermatology before combining an academic position at the University of Cape Town with a clinical position at the Groote Schuur Hospital from 1989-1994.

In 1994, she moved to New Zealand to an academic position at the University of Auckland where she later became Professor of Clinical Genetics and Associate Dean for Research within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. In addition she was Clinical Director of the Northern Regional Genetic Service, a comprehensive genetic service based in Auckland that she initiated in 1995. In 2004, she was appointed as Head of Adult and Cancer Genetics at Genetic Health Services Victoria.

Professor Winship has a wide range of clinical and research interests in inherited disorders, focusing on those with onset in adulthood, including familial cancer, and where foreknowledge of genotype may influence clinical or lifestyle measures to create positive patient outcomes. She has experience in gene discovery and in the translation of such discovery into clinical practice. She has also highlighted societal implications of her discipline with research into the cultural and psychosocial domains of genetic technology and was a member of the inaugural Independent Biotechnology Advisory Council for the Ministry of Research Science and Technology (MORST) in New Zealand.

In Melbourne, Professor Winship is Chair of the Victorian Cooperative Oncology Group (VCOG) Committee. She is on the Human Genetic Advisory Committee for the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC.) She represents Melbourne Health on the Board of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, the Mental Health Research Institute, and on the Scientific Advisory Council of the Bio21 Cluster, where she chairs the Hospital Research Directors Forum.
Professor Winship has had an active role in teaching, education and knowledge transfer to professionals, community support groups and society. She has strong community links and is a member of the committee of the Genetic Support Network Victoria.
