Biosketch:
Gonçalo Abecasis is the Felix Moore Collegiate Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He has been a faculty member at the University of Michigan since 2001. Previously, he completed a Ph.D. in Human Genetics at Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, under the supervision of Professors William Cookson and Lon Cardon. Gonçalo completed his initial training in Genetics at the University of Leeds (in the UK) and at McMaster University (in Canada).

Dr. Abecasis' research focuses on the development of statistical tools for the identification and study of genetic variants important in human disease. Software developed by Dr. Abecasis at the University of Michigan is used in several hundred gene-mapping projects around the world. He and his group have made important contributions to our understanding of patterns of genetic variation across the genome and its relationship to a variety of traits, ranging from age-related macular degeneration, to a variety of cardiovascular risk factors, to psychiatric traits. He is currently deploying next-generation sequencing technologies to study the genomes of thousands of individuals.
