Title: Global and Regional Initiatives: The Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) Genomic Initiative |
The H3Africa Initiative, currently supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Wellcome Trust (WT), aims to facilitate a contemporary research approach to the study of genomics and environmental determinants of common diseases with the goal of improving the health of African populations. To achieve these aims, the H3Africa Initiative aims to create and support the development of the necessary expertise among African scientists, and to establish networks of African investigators. It is anticipated that this initiative will lead to the design of high-quality research in human genomics. More broadly, it is envisaged that the H3Africa research program will develop strategies that will address health inequities in both communicable and noncommunicable diseases with the ultimate goal of improving the health of Africans. This presentation will discuss the recommendations of the communicable and non-communicable working groups for H3Africa. These recommendations are currently available as a white paper at http://h3africa.org and will be presented, in a public conference, to the African and the global scientific communities March 4-5, 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa. |
