Biosketch: Dr. Akarsu is a Medical Geneticist. She obtained her MD (1984) and Ph.D (1994) from Ankara University. She is currently running the Mapping Facility of Hacettepe University Medical Faculty. Research interests include genetic modelling, mapping and cloning of human disease genes. She completed her two years postdocdoral training in the Surgical Research Center, University of Connecticut Health Center (UCONN) where she identified synpolydacty and congenital glaucoma genes. In 1996, she relocated to Hacettepe University and established the first mapping facility of Turkey. Her laboratory's effort resulted in a number of striking studies concerning the identification of genetic localizations and/or genes of rare craniofacial and limb malformations (frontonasal dysplasias, polydactylies, multiple synostosis) and other human disorders (macrophthalmia-coloboma, Limb-Girdle muscular dystrophy and quadrupedal walking in human). Currently, she focuses a combined approach of next generation sequencing followed by homozygosiy mapping to study rare recessive disorders. She is also working with large pedigrees overloaded with psychosis phenotype. |
